Maple Baked Beans

Beans, beans, the more we eat, the more we... want beans, right? Making Baked Beans is simple, there aren’t many ingredients, and there aren’t any complicated steps. But, they do take time! In the end, opening a can and adding some of our not-so-secret ingredient, Beyond Sausage, might taste pretty much the same, but making this classic Sugar Shack dish from scratch, at least once, is pretty fun!

Instructions

  1. Soak beans overnight, or for a minimum of 8 hours ensuring there’s at least 2 inches of water over the top of the beans at all times.
  2. The next day, discard the soaking water. In a large pot over high heat, bring fresh water and beans to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 60 minutes.
  3. Chop onion, cut sausage into bite sized pieces, and measure out the balance of your ingredients.
  4. Once the beans are done, discard the water again. Add all the ingredients to a crock-pot. Cook on high for 3 hours stirring every 30 minutes.
  5. In a sauté pan, over medium-high heat, cook the cut sides of the sausage for a few minutes a side.
  6. At the 90 minute mark, add the sausage to the beans and continue cooking.
  7. Adjust seasoning to taste. For the best flavor, eat the beans the next day, reheating until hot and enjoy!
